Getting outside every day at after-school care

Being outdoors is both healthy and fun. Fresh air, space to run around, exploring the world together – that’s simply a part of life for us all. Children tend to learn and play differently indoors than they do outdoors. For this reason, we make sure we go outdoors every day at Kindergarden. It’s healthy, enhances the children’s creativity, and contributes to the development of social skills.

The chance to work off energy

Many children are still full of energy even after a day at school. Playing outside helps them to burn off this energy. At our after-school care, children can run and play to their heart's content. Being outdoors in the fresh air gives them a feeling of freedom and independence. They learn how to play together and make choices. Being outside also helps them get to know themselves better.

Playing and exercising together

Many of our locations have a childcare staff member who specializes in sport and can involve the children in fun, athletic activities. There is also plenty of room for free play. When left to their own devices, children often come up with the best ideas and their own rules. We give them the freedom to explore that.

Playing outdoors is also a learning experience, with children learning to cooperate, take turns, explore boundaries, or use their imagination. When two children want different things, we teach them how to find a solution together, under the guidance of our childcare professionals.

What outdoor activities are available?

We go outside every day, rain or shine. Naturally, we adjust the activities to suit the circumstances. In the summer, we apply sunscreen and play in the shade. In autumn and winter, we put on warm coats. We also bear your child's age and interests in mind. Everyone gets the space to act in accordance with their own needs.

The activities at our after-school care include:

  • sports like football, hockey, or tag
  • building huts and playing fantasy games
  • free play with friends
  • riding bikes or scooters
  • playing in the sandbox
  • drawing outside
  • reading quietly, or building with LEGO or Kapla

Many of our locations have an outdoor area. If there isn’t one, then we enjoy going out instead, such as to a neighborhood playground or the park around the corner.

Daily challenges outdoors

When they’re outdoors, children can try everything. Being outside inspires their imagination. How do you build sandcastles that actually stay standing? Which insects can you find outside, and how many chestnuts can you gather? All of these things encourage children to be creative.

How exciting it is to push boundaries and use your problem-solving skills when something doesn't work out the first time! This is one of the reasons we also embrace “risky” play at Kindergarden. With proper guidance, your child will learn to take new steps outdoors.
